RACE DIRECTOR’S UPDATE
Kua Bay Time Trial Going Virtual
Message from Race Director Bo Florendo
Aloha, recently the State of Hawai’i and the County of Hawai’i have experienced “community spread” of Covid-19; a alarming increase in the number of people who have been infected with Covid-19 by others within the larger community. The upsurge is of great concern to the everyone, particularly those of us who are at risk of serious infection because of age orpre-existing health conditions. Furthermore, it is possible that asymptomatic carriers of the virus can unknowingly infect others. Not only do individuals face short and long term health issues, an increase in hospitalizations of Covid-19 patients, can adversely affect our county health system.
Although outdoor activity poses less danger than indoor events, members of our Board of Directors are concerned that we, in the cycling community, do our part to reduce community spread. We are mindful, that prior to the actual time trial, we would have gathered in a large group for sign-in and pre-race announcements. This group would certainly number more than 10, which would violate current County health regulations.
In that light, the Board has decided to alter the format of the 2020 Kua Bay Time Trial. Rather than convene in a large group on September 12, entrants are invited to self-time themselves over the time trial course between the dates of September 10 and September 15. You can certainly ride with others, so long as you do not draft unfairly. Pictures and descriptions of the start and finish lines will be published on the HCC website shortly. Upon completion of your race, please forward your time to Race Director via email to [email protected]. Upon receipt of all the times the results will be published on the HCC website.
This format ensures that we all can remain safe and healthy, while at the same time contre la montre, race against the watch! In the event that you have paid a registration fee, and wish to withdraw because of this alteration, we will gladly refund your entry fee. Please feel free to contact me, [email protected], or any member of the board, if you have any further questions. Mahalo nui loa for your understanding and cooperation.
