from Tom Solis
The Hawaii Cycling Club’s Annual Awards Picnic was held Sunday, January 17th at the Kona Sailing Club. On this picture prefect day with sailboats in the background over 40 HCC members and their guests enjoyed the great Mexican food from HCC Patrick Mitchell and his Patricio’s taquerria.
Wendy Minor, HCC VP, hosted the program portion of the event, starting off by acknowledging sponsors: Janet and Grant Miller (Bike Works), Kym and Kris Kiser (Kiser Motorcycles), Joni and John Metzler (Metzler Contracting) and Julia and Oliver Kiel (Cycle Station).
HCC founder, Gary Shields, was introduced by Wendy. Scott Garrett was recognized for HCC obtaining the use of the Kona Sailing Club’s facilities and also for being the only person to have either competed in or volunteered for all of HCC”s 2015 events!!
After being introduced by Wendy, Malik Mariano, HCC Member and High School Senior, reported on his bicycle racing experiences in Arizona and California last summer and his plans to return to the mainland for additional races this Spring. He said he was grateful for the HCC Grant that helped to fund his adventure.
Next, Wendy brought Kym Kiser up to talk about the March 13rd, DRAGON, which is co-sponsored by Kiser Motorcycles and HCC. The DRAGON is comprised of 9 short hills. After racing up each hill competitors wait for all riders to finish then they ride easy to the next hill. The course remains the same as last year – the inaugural year. HCC members have first dibs on getting a slot. Either a USA Cycling Annual License or a USA Cycling one-day license will be required of participants.
Wendy then introduced Tom Solis, representing Hawaii Century Director, Rich Bell, to review the 3rd Annual Hawaii Century to be held Sunday, April 4th starting and ending at Spence Beach. The Century continues to have 30, 60 and 110 mile courses with aid stations approximately every 20 miles with great “grinds” at the end.
Tom Solis then discussed the Prologue Time Trial on February 13th, The Kua Bay on March 5th, the Mauna Loa in August and The Kohala in December 2016. But, the big news he mentioned was The Sea – to-Stars is Bback on August 7th. This is a 49 mile road race from Waikoloa to Mauna Loa visitor center – a gain of 9200 feet with 3 category 1 climbs and 1 cat 3 climb. Start Training Now!
Medals were then presented to several 2015 HCC age group winners and 2015 volunteers by Tom Solis and Toni Romp-Friesen.
After the medal presentation it was Toni Romp-Friesen’s turn, as HCC Secretary, to be introduced by Wendy. Toni discussed the idea of HCC hosting a Sunday ride on the Mamalahoa Hwy, starting and ending in Holualoa. Toni also encouraged – some would say pleaded for – more people to become involved in HCC either as Board Members or volunteers. She also talked about the new 20th Anniversary Club Jersey which should be arriving shortly.
Last but not least SWAG worth over $600 was handed out to lucky ticket holders. HCC thanks Bike Works for 4 x $25 gift certificates, BioAstin for 12 slings with a bottle of BioAstin gels, IRONMAN contributed 5 slings with nutrition in them plus several other items, Cycle Station contributed 3 x 24 boxes of Power Bar gels, while HCC contributed gift certificates to The Hawaii Century, Sea to Stars and Team Mango Racing’s Journey to La La Land. HCC also donated 10 HCC T Shirts. Betsy Solis coordinated the distribution of the SWAG.
A special thanks goes out to Toni and Will Friesen for providing the fresh coffee from their coffee farm, known as Lehualani Farm, located in Honaunau. (Visitors welcome!)
Scott Garrett, Charlie Camacho, John Sherman, Will Friesen set up the tables and chairs. Wendy, Toni and Betsy ran the sign-in table, checking people in, handing out name tags and SWAG drawing tickets, as well as signing up new and renewing HCC members.
Mahalo everyone!
