Aloha to Our Visitors

Aloha and welcome to the Big Island's Hawaii Cycling Club! We hope you're reading this 'cause you're planning a trip over here to ride in paradise. Our club is dedicated to helping out all our fellow cyclist from the world traveler to that first magical vacation out of Iowa or wherever.

We want to provide you with all the information and resources you'll need to make your journey a life long memory that you'll share with your family and friends. Here are some tips on travel, weather, rides and more that we hope you'll find useful. And of course your always welcome to email us with any question or comments you may have.

Arriving on the Big Island
The Sun. The first thing people notice as they step off the plane is the warm tropical breezes and the smell of the ocean not far away. If you arrive during the day you'll feel the warm sun caressing your skin and the brightness of its intensity. While it is a pleasant feeling, it can soon be a vacation wrecker if your not prepared for it. Whenever my friends come to visit I always advise them to put on their sun block before they debark the plane! I once had a friend who forgot but when reminded hastily smeared it on in a haphazard fashion. Needless to say, by the end of the day he looked like a red and white Picasso. An Amusing sight, but it kept him indoors for a few days. It's too common a sight to see a lobster red tourist walking painfully down the street because they didn't think twice about using sun block.

Drink up! Aside from the punishing rays of the sun, the next biggest pitfall to a great vacation is dehydration. Something about the tropics just drains a body out. You'll need to drink water all day long, especially if you're out on your bike all day. While cooler climates may not require you to drink as much, the high humidity of Hawaii will cause your body to lose moisture faster than normal. If you perspire a lot then you should also consider salt tables to help. Nothing ruins a ride like cramps and that awful hung over feeling that comes from dehydration so drink up!

Bikes. There are some great shops to rent bikes from. You can find almost any type of bike to rent, from mountain, road, touring, tandems, recumbent, etc. If you should choose to bring yours, these same shops will be happy to assemble the bike for you if you decide to ship it ahead or carry it in from the airport. It's advised to contact them and to set an appointment. And if you just want to join a tour we have plenty of tour companies offering all types of riding adventures.

Where to go. The beach of course! Just kidding! Actually the big island has every climate zone except permafrost! So don't be surprised if your riding along and it looks like the savannas of Africa, the rolling hills of northern California, or of course, a tropical rainforest. We have it all and you can experience it while touring the island. Head to the summit of Mauna Kea on a mountain bike and the 14,000' elev. will knock you for a loop. Ride along the lava fields of the Kohala coast on the infamous Ironman course between Kona and Hawi and pay homage to the wind and heat. The great thing is that you can decide where you want to go and if you need help, check out our cool links page for tour companies and our helpful bike shops or email us with your questions.
