Hawaii Cycling Club
Minutes 2-5-05 Monthly
Membership Meeting
The February monthly
membership meeting was called to order shortly after 09:30AM February 5, 2005
by President Chris Huber.
Present: Grant Miller, Janet
Miller, Mary Osborne, Leonard Peddicord, Bob Schratz, Scotty Scott, Doug Wilkerson,
Tom Solis, Jennifer Nottage, Chris Huber, Maggie Spears, Bill Van Horn, Steve
Crane, Dusty Best, Leslie McDowell, and Jean Marie Barreaux.
Scotty reviewed the changes
to the By-Laws which were introduced at the last meeting but because of our
rules could not be enacted until proper notification had been given. The
minutes from the last meeting provided that notification. The Chair entertained
a motion to adopt those changes to the By –Laws:
1. Section 2 of the By-Laws be amended to read:
Section 2.
Officers shall hold office for 12 months or until their successors are elected
and duly installed.
Officers will serve from the first of December through the following November.
Officers will be
current dues paying members of the club.”
2. Section1 of the By-Laws be amended to read:
Section 1.
Regular meetings of the club shall be held on the first Saturday of each month
after the morning rides, at the Old Airport Kid’s playground, approximately 09:30 a.m. unless this falls on a
holiday then the meeting will be the
following Saturday.
Mary so moved, seconded by
Jennifer. There was no discussion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chris then initiated a
discussion concerning races. There was much discussion focusing on who would
take the lead for Sea to Stars, whether or not we were scheduled for a state
time trial. Chris will clarify with state and ask Gary if he wants to take the
lead for Sea to Stars. Chris will also form a race committee.
It is understood for us to
retain our USA Cycling membership we must have one sanctioned race a year.
Next there was a lengthy
discussion concerning monetary sponsorship by the club for individuals to race
off island. The main points were, should there be a limit on the amount, should
there be a differentiation based on skill and should we sponsor tri-athletes.
The club has a current policy which is dated 11/8/02 and needs revision. Scotty
will draft a straw man for the executive board which then will be circulated to
the membership for input. Scotty also solicited any suggestions for the straw
man.
Leonard then discussed the
issue of insurance and the need to renew the clubs insurance. The Executive
Board will review the Clubs insurance and take the necessary action.
Leonard then stated that the
paid up membership was at 59 with the addition of our newest member Jean Marie
Barreaux. Jennifer requested a copy of the membership list with phone numbers.
Scotty will ask if anyone has any objections to sharing their name and phone number
with other members. A listing of those with no objections will be provided to
the membership
The next followed a lengthy
discussion concerning jerseys and shorts. The main point being; should we change the design, include shorts,
update sponsorship. Mary volunteered to work on design concepts and cost while
Chris would attack the sponsorship issue. Hopefully by the next meeting we
would have something concrete to evaluate. Leonard pointed out that we only
have two large jerseys left.
Scotty then told everyone of
two rides coming up on the East side:
On February 13th, Sunday at
7:30 we have scheduled a ride of approximately
70 miles from Hilo to the Puna
area. The route will be from Mid-Pacific Wheel
Bike Shop in Hilo to Pahoa (17miles)
and then to the coast and the famous
"red road". Our trip
will take the group to Kalapana area and then alone
the oceanside road through Kapoho
region and back to Hilo. This trip is a
beautiful run through a wonderful rain
forest area and has coastal vistas
beyond description.
For those that choose not to meet in
Hilo at 7:30 a.m. and would like a
shorter route the group will stop in
Pahoa to pick up any new riders that
wish to join our group. Meet in Pahoa
at the "new" subway shop just before
turning off into the town of
Pahoa. We will be driving by there at about
8:30 a.m. If you join the group in
Pahoe then the ride will be cut in half
(35 miles).
MARCH:
The March 13th, Sunday, ride will be different
and I suspect new to most
riders. We are following the same program for beginning the ride. Again
starting in Hilo at Pacific Wheel Bike Shop at 7:30 a.m. The ride will be
a 50 miler, but this time it will involve climbing to 6,000 ft elevation
in 20 miles. The route is up the road
to Kuklani Prison (sounds exciting).
But wait. This route is on a newly paved road that has relatively no
traffic- wonder why? The route will be a circle route so the return will
be a fast descent. Several of us have ridden
much of the road and have
found it to be very interesting,
challenging, and a pleasure to ride.
If anyone needs overnight accommodations please
call Steve Lundblad or
myself (Tim Stewart). We can put up a few folks quite easily. Steve's
number is 895-2070 or Tim's number is 962-0725.
The meeting adjourned at
approximately 10:30.
